Mechanical Soft Diet Plan – Including IDDSI A mechanical soft diet consists of foods that are soft, tender, moist, and easy to chew. Foods may be chopped, minced, ground, or mashed to make chewing easier for individuals with poor dentition, missing teeth, poorly fitting dentures, or difficulty chewing. IDDSI clarification: The term mechanical soft does not correspond to one specific IDDSI level. Depending on the patient's chewing and swallowing abilities, the prescribed texture may be IDDSI Level 6 – Soft & Bite-Sized, Level 5 – Minced & Moist, or Level 4 – Pureed. The appropriate level should be determined by the patient's clinical assessment and swallowing recommendations.
